Mattie I. Hill

BUTLER – Service for Mattie Irene Lewis Alston Hill, age 94, was held Saturday, January 4, 2020 at Millwood Primitive Baptist Church with Pastor Marvin Johnson officiating. Interment followed at Woodall Cemetery.

Irene was born July 15, 1925 as Mattie Lee Lewis. She was the only child of Irean Lewis and the daughter of Wallace McNeely. Irene transitioned from this earthly life on Sunday, December 22, 2019 after suffering a stroke the week before. She was preceded in death by her mother, Irean Lewis; grandmother, Mattie Lewis; father, Wallace McNeely; husband, Cass Alston; sister, Gertrude Capers; and son-in-law, Paul Rohlman.

Although Millwood Primitive Baptist Church was her family church, she also attended Thompkinville AME later in life. Irene married Cass Alston, a career U.S. Navy military man, right out of high school. Because the family moved often and was sometimes far from a family church, Irene made sure her two children were well grounded in the Christian faith. She sat with them around the table every Wednesday night and read and studied the Bible. She also made sure that they attended the nearest Sunday School, no matter the church or denomination.

Irene leaves to cherish her memory: a daughter, Patricia Alston Rohlman, Oak Ridge, TN; a son, Charles Alston, Tampa, FL; nieces, Carolyn Capers and Linda Capers Lewis, York, AL; and many friends and relatives. Of special consideration are: Augusta Ward, Rita Johnson, Peggie Adams, Sonja Johnson, Larry Pogue, Jr., and John W. Dunn.

The Celebration of Life Service was rendered by Weatherly-Studdard Funeral Home of Butler.
