Raymond S. Ward, Sr.

PENNINGTON — Funeral Service for Raymond Sylvester Ward, Sr., age 80, were held November 22, 2022 at Millwood Primitive Baptist Church in Pennington.

Raymond Ward, Sr. was born on January 28, 1942 to the late Prince and Annie Daisy Ward. He departed this life on November 16, 2022 at Choctaw General Hospital in Butler. He was preceded in death by his parents and eight siblings.

Raymond, Sr. was a member of Millwood Primitive Baptist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher, Deacon, finance committee member, and Usher.

He joined the U.S. Air Force on December 18, 1959 where he served as an Air Force Admin Clerk. He was Honorably Discharged on September 9, 1963. He later became employed with Meridian & Bigbee (M & B) Railroad as a Railroad Office Clerk and retired after 20 plus years of employment.

Raymond Sr. leaves to cherish his memories: his wife Augusta Ward of Pennington; four children, Cynthia Ward Sutton (Devie) of Mobile, Ora Yvette Ward of Orlando, FL, Louise Ward Smith (Douglas) of Madison, AL, and Raymond Sylvester Ward, Jr. (LaTonya) of Pleasant Grove; a devoted granddaughter, Alicia Redus (LaRon) of Athens; nine grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Ward McGee of Pennington, and Ida Ward Bonham of Glen Dale, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The Celebration of Life Service was rendered by Weatherly-Studdard Memorial Funeral Home of Butler.

 

Marcelete R. Hurtt

PENNINGTON – Funeral services for Marcelete Roberts Hurtt, 75, were held November 25, 2022, at the Chapel of Bumpers Funeral Home with Rev. Lyle Meador officiating. Burial followed in the Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Marcelete passed away November 22, 2022, at Thomas Hospital in Fairhope. She was born November 9, 1947.

Marcelete loved her family more than anything. Her children and grandchildren were her world; however, the beach was her happy place.

Survivors include her husband, James Hurtt; son, James Hurtt, Jr. (Cindy); daughter, Delsey Dew (Andy); grandchildren, Jay Hurtt (Sumyr); Josh Hurtt (Hali); Tori Dew; and Cole Dew; great

grandchild, Blakely Hurtt; sister, Patricia Mosley (Bill); brothers, Wade Roberts (Vicky); and Dane Roberts (Martha).

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lloyd and Nettie Roberts and her sisters, Joyce Motley and June Mundy.

Pallbearers: John Jenkins, Jay Hurtt, Josh Hurtt, Andrew Dew, Cole Dew, and Tori Dew.

Nova T. Patrick

GILBERTOWN – Services for Nova Turner Patrick, 65, were held November 26, 2022, at Red Springs Assembly with Rev. Jerry Turner, Rev. Kendal Turner, and Rev. Billy Jowers officiating. Burial followed at Red Springs Assembly Cemetery. Nova passed away November 20, 2022, at Anderson Regional Medical Center in Meridian. She was born February 21, 1957, in Butler.

Nova loved her grandchildren, church and the Lord with all her heart. She was always a care giver to everyone. Even when she was sick and down, she did all she could to still attend church.

She will be greatly missed by her family and friends everywhere.

Survivors include her husband, Mike Patrick; father, Donald Turner, daughters, Melody Gardner (Graham) and Angela Phillips (Jeffery); siblings, Jerry Turner (Elaine); Marvel Dunn (Eddie); Karen Day; Kendall Turner; and Janice Napp; grandchildren, Braden Bridges, Addyson Patrick, Cayde Patrick, Denley Mosley, Harper Phillips, Callie Phillips, Sawyer Gardner, Seth Gardner and Nola Grace Gardner.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Lorine Turner and her sister, Mary Bernice Turner.

Pallbearers: Jeff Turner, Chris Nihart, Anthony Day, Bryan Day, Philip Vance, and Allen Roberts.

Vic Gourgues

WARD – Funeral services for Vic Gourgues, 79, of Ward were held November 23, 2022, at the Chapel of Bumpers Funeral Home in Butler with Rev. Franklin McLelland officiating. Burial followed in the Shorts Cemetery. Visitation was at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Vic passed away November 20, 2022, at his residence. He was born July 28, 1943, in Quitman. He was a U.S. Army Veteran.

Vic loved traveling, spending time outdoors, building furniture, but most of all he adored his family and spending time with them. He was an avid Alabama Football fan.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Gourgues; son, John Gourgues (Rose Ann); daughter, Michelle Gourgues; step-sons, Lyman Webb (Vonda); Lamar Webb (Dawn); Ryan Webb (Kayla); step-daughter, Shonda Webb; step-mother, Adele Gourgues; siblings, Greg Gilbert, Liz Springfield, Lylin Gourgues, Choyer Parker, and Denise Hulsey; grandchildren, Jayda Fisher (Stephen); Gabe Gourgues; Olivia Bullard; Isabella Bullard; and great grandchild; Abe Fisher.

He was preceded in death by his father; Elmore Gourgues; mother, Marie Gilbert; wife, Billie June Gourgues; grandson, Sheldon Gourgues.

Timonthy Rembert

BUTLER – Graveside Services were held for Timothy “Shine” Rembert on November 23, 2022 at New Jerusalem Baptist Church Cemetery, Myrtlewood, with Elder David Miller, officiating. Rev. Johnny Doss, Pastor.

Timothy “Shine” Rembert was born January 19, 1959 to Susie and the late Benjamin Rembert, Sr. He departed this life on November 13, 2022 at Anderson’s Regional Medical Center in Meridian.

Timothy confessed to Christ at an early age and joined Jerusalem Baptist Church in Myrtlewood. After graduating from Choctaw County High School, he joined the U.S. Air Force, and later started a new career as a truck driver.

He leaves to cherish his memories: one son, Jedrick “Pumpkin”

(Pennington) and two daughters, Chasity and Kimbria (Chicago, IL); his mother, Susie Rembert; 7 grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Celebration of Life Services were rendered by Weatherly-Studdard Memorial Chapel, Inc., 111 Vanity Fair Avenue, Butler, Alabama 36904.

 

Wiley H. Russell

PINE HILL – Wiley Higdon Russell age 58 of Pine Hill, died November 20, 2022 at his home. He was born October 7, 1964 in Tuscaloosa, to Billy Ray and Sammye Russell (Dahlberg), He was a truck driver for Scotch Lumber Company.

He is survived by his son, Timothy Russell; mother, Sammye Higdon Dahlberg; two brothers, William Russell (Sue) and John Russell; nephew, Jonathan Russell (Nicolette); great niece, Abbigail Russell; extended family, special friend, Peggy Pope, Randall Black (Amy) and Angela Walker (Lamar); five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, Will Hayden Russell, his father, Billy Ray Russell, grandparents, Fred and Neva Russell of Gadsden, and Sam and Eudessa Higdon of Walnut Grove.

Graveside funeral services were held at Altoona-Walnut Grove Cemetery in Walnut Grove, November 25, 2022 with Rev. Phillip Fowler officiating.

Active pallbearers were Lamar Walker, Chase Grochowski, Darron Desantis, Matthew Higdon, Jonathan Russell, and William Russell.

Mary L. Napier

BUTLER – Funeral services for Mary L. Napier were held on November 25, 2022 at Springhill Baptist Church. Interment

was in Little Place Cemetery in Toxey, with Pastor David Ferrell, officiating.

Mary Lee Napier was born February 8, 1943 in Butler. She was the oldest of ten children.

Mary worked in nursing homes as an STNA and was employed as a housekeeper before retiring. She enjoyed knitting, gardening, traveling, and loved her cats.

She was a member of Springhill Missionary Baptist Church.

Mary married Albert Charles Napier in July, 1997.

She is survived by her pride and joy, son, Tommie L. (Mary) Pope; three grandsons, Thomas Pope, Jonathan Pope, and Kenneth Pope; three brothers, George Pope, Don

(Linda) Pope, and Frank Pope; three sisters, Clara Johnson, Barbara (William) Johnson, Geraldine (Melvin) Tharps, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mary Napier was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Charles Napier; parents, Grover Pope and Willie Mae Crumbley; brothers, Johnny Pope, Bobbie Vance, and Julius Pope.

Angie R. Becton

BUTLER – Funeral services for Ms. Angie Ruth Giles Becton were held November 23, 2022, at Phillips Funeral Home in

Gilbertown, with Reverend Dennis Kennedy officiating.  Visitation was held for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.  Interment followed in the Providence Cemetery, Shubuta.

Ms. Becton was born March 19, 1929, in Choctaw County, Holloway and Lula Davis Giles.  She passed away November 18, 2022, at her residence at the age of 93. Ms. Becton was a member of Lusk Baptist Church and loved her family.  She was a hard worker and enjoyed gardening and canning.

She is survived by her sons, James Davis (Ann) of Mobile, and Gavin Davis of Brewton; grandchildren, Jimmy Davis, Jonathan Davis, Andy Lee, Heidi Stewart, and Dawson Fayard; and great grandchildren, Nicholas Davis, Jennifer Davis, Tyler Davis, Carson Davis, Brady Davis, Jaxxon Davis (on the way), Angela Stewart, and Gavin Stewart.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rosher Gavin Davis; father, Holloway Giles and mother, Lula Davis Giles.

Serving as pallbearers were David Kinard, Larry Spence, Mack Edward Todd, Jonathan Davis, Nicholas Davis, and Harrell Giles.

Dorothy N. Lucas

TOXEY – Funeral services for Dorothy Nell “Dottie” Dexter Lucas,

were held November 22, 2022, at Phillips Funeral Home in

Gilbertown, with Adam Tait and Eddie Giles officiating.  Visitation was held for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.  Interment followed in the Old Lusk Cemetery in Toxey.

Ms. Dottie was born July 22, 1927, in Waxhaw, MS, to Daniel Dewitt Dexter and Ina Harwell Dexter.  She passed away November 21, 2022, at her residence at the age of 95.  She was a business owner in both Gilbertown and Toxey for many years.

She is survived by her son, Kenneth Earl “Ken” Lucas, Jr. of Toxey; daughter, Celena L. Doggett of Toxey; grandchildren, Kenneth Earl Lucas, III, Candice L. Jenkins, and Maggie D. Tait (Adam); and great grandchildren, Jordan Strawn, Abbi Strawn, and Thomas Tait.  She was preceded in death by her

husband, Kenneth Earl Lucas, Sr.; son, Dexter Gary Lucas; father, Daniel Dewitt Dexter; and mother, Ina Harwell Dexter.

Serving as pallbearers were Ken Lucas, III, Woody Singley, Joey Bonner, Billy Mosley, Jr., Lucas Lewis, and Turk Phillips.  Honorary pallbearers included Marlon Lucas, Barry Lewis, Terry Phillips, and Jimmy Brawner.
