High-speed chase leads to crash, death of Marengo County suspect

BUTLER — A high-speed chase that apparently originated in Marengo County has ended in a fatality on Highway 17 this evening.

Marengo County law enforcement officers had reportedly been pursuing a suspect following an incident in that county when the suspect crossed into Choctaw County, where local officers continued the chase.

A Pennington police officer was reportedly chasing the suspect on Highway 17 just south of Butler when the crash occurred. The police vehicle and the suspect’s vehicle both ended up in a deep ravine off the highway, just north of Fire Tower Hill.

The officer did not suffer injuries in the crash. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene and had to be extricated from the vehicle by first responders.

The Sun-Advocate is awaiting more information on the crash, the identity of the suspect, and the incident that led to the chase.
