SEVERE WEATHER UPDATE

Weather officials are continuing to update forecasts for the storm system that is expected to hit the area tonight and Saturday, and local residents are urged to heed the warnings and take measures to remain safe.

According to the National Weather Service and Choctaw EMA, severe weather could move into the area by late Friday night, with the most significant weather to come all day on Saturday. Currently, the primary time for the severe weather is forecast for mid-morning Saturday through late afternoon into early evening.

Officials are predicting strong (non-tornadic) winds capable of producing significant damage, heavy thunderstorms, and the potential for tornadoes. Widespread rainfall could top 1 to 3 inches from Friday into Saturday.

The City of Butler has announced that the new storm shelter will open at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

The Sun-Advocate will provide updates about weather warnings as information is made available.
